Do I need to license my dog?

Under By-law 2021-11, all dogs in Douro-Dummer need to have a license. All licensed dogs will be issued a dog tag and registered in the Township's licensing system. If a lost dog is reported, we can find the dog tag number in the Township's licensing system and your lost dog can be identified. All dogs over 4 months of age must have a license.

What is the benefit of licensing my dog?

The Township's By-law requires all dogs to have an annual licence. If you have a dog licence the Township or the Peterborough Humane Society can help reunite you with dog if your dog is lost.

Where does the money from dog licences go?
|
Dog Licenses pay for the animal control services delivered to the Township through a contract with the Peterborough Humane Society.

Does my dog have to wear a dog tag at all times?
|
Your dog(s) will need to wear a dog tag at all times. By wearing the dog tag at all times, your dog has a greater chance of being identified should it leave your property.

Is there a limit to the number of dogs per dwelling?
|
Yes. There is a maximum limit of 3 dogs per household. This only includes dogs over the age of 4 months.

How do I remove a deceased dog from your records?

Email the Township to notify us of a deceased dog. |

- Dogs are to be kept in a sanitary and clean environment
- The dogs physical and behavioral needs must be met – food, water, shelter, warmth, physical exercise, attention and veterinary care
- Dogs are not allowed to be loose, unless they are on your property or in a designated off-leash area
- Clean up after your dog – they poop, you scoop
- All dogs must be licensed
- Prevent excessive barking through socializing, dog training and exercise

Who should I call if an animal is being abused or neglected?

To report animal cruelty (such as abuse, neglect, abandonment and animal care standards issues) contact the Provincial Animal Welfare Services at 1-833-926-4625 or the Ontario Provincial Police at 1 888 310-1122.
The Peterborough Humane Society does not investigate cases involving animal cruelty.

What should I do if I have found or lost a dog?
|
If the lost dog has a dog tag, call the Municipal Office at 705-652-8392, the dog tag number can be looked up in the Township's licensing system and the dog can be reunited with their owner(s).
