Waste Collection Audit
- August 19 - 23, 2024; and
- August 26 - 30, 2024.
- The purpose of the waste audit is to learn about trends in waste disposal and to learn how to better serve residents' waste management needs. This audit will help Peterborough County implement new ways to divert waste from the landfill.
- All waste collected is mixed together to ensure privacy - no household waste will be identifiable to a specific address.
- The waste audit is part of the Waste Management Master Plan update, which is a Capital Budget item that was approved by Peterborough County Council for 2024, and is funded by the waste management reserve.
- The waste management operating budget was reduced by $1.4 million in 2024 due to the transition of the blue box program to producer responsibility. This offset the County tax levy increase.
This work is part of the Waste Management Master Plan update that Cambium is completing for the County of Peterborough. Cambium and the County of Peterborough will be coordinating direction with the waste hauler to minimize disruption to regular collection routes.
The waste audits are being conducted to characterize types of material being included in the existing curbside collection programs. This will help identify any potential diversion options for the County of Peterborough. The composition of curbside waste collected and audited will not be recorded based on each specific property, instead will be included in an overall study of the waste stream. Cambium will not be keeping any materials or taking note of any personal information included in the waste collected. All waste will be sent for disposal following the audit.
